^ Original Freeciv scenario "Earth 160x90 v2" Peirce Quincuncial north pole center, south pole all 4 corners, south america split Gringorten - north pole center, south pole all 4 corners, south america split ^ This album shows the original map image with 3 more projections which are a bit weird but might actually work-out ok as Freeciv maps.Īdams World in a square 1 - only 1 pole which is at upper-right and lower-left corners which might be perfect for standard Freeciv topology "Normal" rectangular projections in Gprojector which can easily be translated to Freeciv maps: The 19 projections in this album are the only projections by GProjector which produce "normal" looking maps that don't add or lose areas, and can easily be translated into new Freeciv maps. ^ Link is to a picture album of different projections from the Freeciv Earth 160x90 v2 map. ^ Just for fun - this is the Earth 160x90 v2 Freeciv scenario's map, converted to PPM image at 1-to-1 (tile-to-pixel), then enlarged, and reprojected as Winkel Tripel in GProjector. Those are just screenshots of course, if you want actual exports of any of the projected images as png or uncompressed tiff, let me know! ^ Only difference is adding "Bartholomew's Scaling" I quit the program, then started again and the Winkel Tripel looks better now. GProjector gets a bit buggy on my system when I keep changing the projection. Given the cold reception that has been given to Civ V, I would say Freeciv is a very good alternative to the commercial games. Plus, the multiplayer is excellent (although it can be hard to find a game when not playing people you know). Whoever said that it takes all the best bits of Civ II and removes all the annoying bits I think had it spot on. I don't really see why Ctrl+Alt+F1 should elaborate why it is a great game when you gave no reason for how "it sucks". It removes the diplomacy aspect, but gives you a much better chance, plus you have to worry less about trying to keep everyone happy! If you are still struggling, make teams when setting up the game and give your side more nations. The AI expands very quickly, so if you don't like to build tons of cities, but prefer to develop your cities well, try reducing the size of the map and increasing minimum distance between cities. From this version, a bug with the AI was fixed where if you went to war with them, they would hate you through the whole game and their attitude would never recover (my first patch for an open source project :)) Make sure you play version 2.2.4 or above. So what?" :?: I have played the game many, many times, and I still never increase the difficulty beyond 'easy'! If you need proof, there is a place in the code where the AI's war reason is given as 'none' and the comment reads "We have no legimitate reason. It will crush you sometimes with no good reason. Unlike the commercial games, the AI is not there to entertain you. I suggest reading through the game manual () and playing the tutorial, which can be selected after clicking 'Start Scenario Game' on the main menu.Īs well as having complex gameplay, the AI is also very unforgiving. Freeciv is an excellent game, although it certainly has quite a learning curve if you haven't played the Civilization series (particularly Civ II) before.
